Skiing and the Big Picture.
Europiean Resorts
Big ski resort infrastructures in Europe are some of the best and biggest in the world. Resorts like Courchevel, Verbier, Zermatt, and the combined resort of Port du Soleil offer fast chair-lifts, big gondolas, glamorous mountain restaurants with 5-star service, and local traditional food. This easily attracts newcomers from around the world and keeps loyal customers satisfied. These big ski resorts alone can easily reach over a million skiers per year! The off-piste skiing culture has taken off since the invention of "fat-skis" in the early 2000s. Many skiers have been enjoying themselves on fat skis and their benefits in deep powdery conditions, leading to longer powder days with less leg fatigue and more off-piste skiing! Unfortunately, it is now difficult to find an off-piste area that has not been tracked by eager "early bird" powder seekers, especially in larger resorts around the world.
Getting away from the crowds - Ski Touring!
Early modern ski-tourers used it as a means of travel to access or traverse harsh remote winter areas around the world for various purposes such as delivering mail, hunting, or shopping. Nowadays, skiers use this form of transportation to reach untouched parts of the mountain, get away from crowds, and enjoy fitness, fresh air, and stunning views from the top. Personally, I enjoy all of that, especially skiing down from the top in heavenly conditions! Since the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, more and more people are trying to get away from tight lift lines and crowded ski resorts to reduce their exposure to the virus. Some of you reading may have acquired a pair of touring skis over this period, and I invite you to join me on my many adventures!
Mountain Safety and Danger Recognition.
Since the invention of fat-skis, more people are able to ski off-piste and expose themselves to the dangers on the mountain, such as avalanches. Mountain safety education is crucial, and the ability to recognize these dangers is life-saving. It is also important to make everyone aware of the risks and dangers to the people around them.
Remember, mountain safety is life-saving!
